For if we do not master the mind the rest of our day just goes to shit... I did 4 years of study of Acupuncture with an awesome group of teachers and it wasn't just all about Acupuncture.. I was about how our organs and our thoughts reflect our health and habits..
So these things keep me on track to keep striving even when the wave seems to have me rolling on the sand and getting slammed..
It's no walk in the path but each little interruption I give to a negative thought takes it's power away.. So here is today's little inspiration and I hope you love it as I think this guy has a big future in the way he reflects his art through positive quotes by famous people..

http://zenpencils.com/

Dressing the slim, athletic body type..

No matter which Style book you look at they will all say the same thing about this figure type.. Adding curves and shape is the most important factor to keep an eye on.. So ruffles, detail, bows, anything you can think of really that will give you detail.. You want to keep away from short crop tops etc that will accentuate the fact that you are straight up and down.. Also you want to go against the verticle line rule as that will not do you justice..
So what to look for, is designs that will give you shape, bias cuts are good for you as the magic of this cut makes the fabric move a bit more while you are wearing it.. Pencil cut skirts done the right way will also add some shape for you..
Slim cut pants - look for one's with pockets on the back as well if you can, trapeze style dresses, florals and graphic prints..
Any body type will have an asset they love and something they don't so make sure when you are looking out for new wardrobe pieces that you take that into account too.. It is never just black and white..
The perfect neck line for you is the wrap top, vneck and boatline, add a little padded bra here and there but don't be locked into them.. Allow ruffles and details to help you there.. My vneck vintage ruffle frock is good for ladies with curves and without.. Pick the right size and it is the magic frock..
Also look out for full circle skirts, accentuate your top with a vneck top with that one and you can go all out at the drop waist styles as well as this will throw off any perceptions about being small on top.. They will be blown away by your style..
With your swimmers keep to the detail rule, opt for the padded bikini or if there aren't any that light your fire then go with one that has tassles or ruffles..
If you are a bit on the tall side either go for floor length or below the knee length, what you can really rock is to wear that mid calf length..
There is no such thing as the perfect figure really, as it varies for everyone what your ideal is, though if you have the perfect wardrobe you can look hot in anything you wear..

How to rock the Pear Body.

This photo tells it all for the Pear shape, voluptuous hips and small waist and upper body.. So with any body type focus on your assets always, so for you it is your small waist, arms and your legs.
There is a great trick in styling, to shrink the widest part of the body if you make sure the garment you are wearing cuts right in the middle of it, it will appear smaller.. So take that into account when you are trying on Jackets or shorts depending on where your widest part is for you.
Your staples should be either Aline or full circle skirts, your best cut frock is sleeveless or spaghetti strap styles that flare into an Aline or full skirt...
The optimum pant is the wide leg pant to cover the thigh and to have a relatively flat front, try a slight flare on the bottom to give a balance to your shape.. This will make your legs look longer and leaner, also keep an eye on back pockets as one's that are too small do you no favour neither do too big ones..
Go all out on your tops, that's where your assets are, if you are happy with your arms show them off either by wearing sleeveless designs or by wearing fitted sleeves.
You can pull off the turtle neck, again this flatters you shape at the top, Blazers, remember to keep an eye on the length.. Wide collared shirts are great, or draping tops with rouched or puffed sleeves which will give the perception of the hourglass shape..
Avoid; cargo pants or one's with a lot of detail.. I think everyone should as there are so many other casual pants out there that do so much for you but everyone has a personality that is individual and if you love it, you can wear it.. Keep away from too detailed patterned pants, that just add bulk also don't go cream or light coloured, there are so many other colours that will do you more favours.. Try Turquoise it is actually just as slimming as Black but not as well known..
Try them out, play a little, experiment and not just once, there are so many different fabrics out there. Take the time to explore..
Ideal swimmers for you, high cut on the thighs elongates the legs, go darker, a cool navy looks so stylish and if you can get one with a little slash in the neckline you may be able to pull it off as a top under pants. If it is a one piece go for one with padding, every little bit helps.. Other than that go for embellishments like ruffles, ruching and bold prints and colours on bikini's on top and keep it a solid colour on bottom..
Depending on how your Pear shape manifests there are also rules you can bend.. So go try out these shapes and more.. Think in basic shapes to start and then get more adventurous as you go, i.e. pencil skirts in the right cut..
Designs in my range you can rock are Corset frock, Aline skirts, pleat tops, silk slip, grace pants, or shorts, Bermuda's, Marchella skirt, Nina Pants when they are restocked. Cowl tees are coming and there are lots of frocks coming through like the new Kira Frock, etc.. Happy styling..

Dressing for your Apple Body Type..

Ok so this number is not really correct but I do love the voluptuous Barbie.
Okay so the basic way to determine whether you are an Apple body type it comes down to one simple question.. Do you carry your weight in your middle..? Ok there maybe some on your arms, thighs etc but do you have a waistline? You do not have to be a big woman to be an apple, I am an apple purely because my beautiful babies seemed to train my body that now when I carry weight it goes to my tummy..
So let's get to the basics now on how to get the best out of our beautiful figures that we have right now..
Staples: you should have cute Aline shifts, short skirts, blouses with a gently shaped waistline.. wrap shirts, wrap frocks and wide leg or bootleg pants... I am working on more aline shifts this coming round of designs and a funky blazer that will suit all body types but it is definitely good for Apples.. also long fitted tops and jumpers that fall to the hips.. It elongates the waists.
Go for patterns on your bottoms, bohemian tunics are super cool.. also go for fine knits like Cashmere, it gives you the warmth but not the bulk..
Your best cut dress would be an empire cut waist, something that fits under the bust, please don't for shirring frocks as they don't last quality wise.. It is to have an aline or flared skirt.. The corset frock is perfect for every body type as it shows off the sexy neckline and pulls you in under that bust and billows out softly depending on the fabric..
Avoid; bold patterns on the top, focus away from your middle, hence the detail in the pants, shiny fabrics, they are synthetic anyway and will pill after a few washes.. short jackets or waists that skim the waistline, unless you wear it up all the time and with something fitted on the bottom then yes you can get away with it.. Chunky knits, well you know why.. Tapered pants are evil, you can wear skinny jeans if you have great legs and can add a wedge to the outfit, but remember keep your attention down low..
Necklines; now necklines you should work towards are a cowl neck, hello sexy, a scoop again that neckline is always flattering no matter what you size.. then also the fave the Vneck, it elongates your torso..
Ok so play in the dressing rooms for a while, try on things you would normally say no to and don't buy too big a size.. Showing off your shape is always the right way to go.. Enjoy.

Getting it right first time...

So when we go shopping do we really know what we are looking for or are we hoping that something will leap out and catch our eye.. Yes it is fun that way, sometimes you come home with a booty of goodies but some days are just not as productive.. But if you know what you are looking for you can feel assured that you didn't waste money..
So to be able to do that you need a little info to help you to be sure..
Almost 80% of women do not know their cup size, that's insane..
So when you know what your body type is and your asset then you get a first step insight into how to shop smart.. It's not all you need but its a great start..
Ok so to work out your bust size you need to work out your band measurement put the tape around your back, under your arms and take the measurement above your bust.. Along the flat part of your chest above your bust.. Then go across you nipples and the difference between the above and across will give you your cup size..
1" = A, 2" B, 3" C, 4"D, 5"DD etc..
Mine is a 36B. It takes all the guess work out of shopping and makes you feel like you know what you are doing.. There are difference types of bra's and I think for B cups upwards a Balconette Bra is divine, it allows your cleavage to gently fall into place and also make you look like you have truly alot more than it seems.. Bigger busts go for the higher cut bra as it will give you support plus make your bust look smaller.. Small busts go for a high cut bra as well with a little padding, not too much, just a little.. your tops should fit your bust based on your size and the cut you choose to flatter your neck line..
Keep this info in a diary or in notes on your iphone.. You need it where you can access it so go iPhone..
Start with the under garments and everything else you throw over will work a dream..

2012 the next Adventure begins..

There is lots of talk of goals but I have found last year that I kind of lost my way by mid way through the year because I had achieved my goals or the goal posts had changed.. Thus I no longer want that anymore as some of my goals looked so foreign to me by the middle of the year I was wondering what was a I thinking in Jan.. The mind is fickle and to put it under so much pressure in January when your brain is fried from the previous year's crescendo just seems like another chore..
So how bout we instil new principles to live by for the year.. That seems like a doable low pressure thing, then as bright opportunities come up during the year then we can take them and run with them without having guilt of not sticking to the plan we set after a hazy holiday..

So I read a few blogs regularly, will do more this year as I really want to improve my blogging and social media aspect of my business.. And I came across this great little piece of wisdom.. It's the 10 rules to success, I feel it has enough within it to inspire you and to also give you a good structure to work from..

I posted it on my FB page as I am so not tech savvy enough to work out how to link it but will have it on my facebook page soon.. Otherwise I will put an inspiration page on my website..

For me some of the important things I am aiming for is being more present in my relationships with my family and friends.. Heading up north or making more phone calls home and being relaxed when my kids come home from school and being ready with some fun projects for us to do.. Putting more effort into making life within the home a lot more fun and enjoying the simple life..

Also with my business, spending more time designing and getting into the fun of it all. Rather than it being a business to me it is a creative process and I have lost a bit of that in 2011.. So getting back to designing and getting into handmade circles that is where I am going..

I'm very excited about this year as I feel I have a much more balanced outlook.. Starting the year with a stroll..

See you soon,

Irene

Giving gifts that are hand made..

My sister in law, Lesley, sent me this email that said how much we save the environment by buying local but also buying handmade.. Etsy has always been a special place to go when I feel like getting funky as you can get something handmade, well priced..
http://www.etsy.com/buy?ref=si_buy
Then again go to your local markets, Southbank, mmmm not as much handmade as I would like but still one of the better markets, although the West End market is pretty cool also..
Or BrisStyle events http://www.bris-style.com/ these ladies work hard and are so creative it just makes you want to go and study something or try and whip something up at home as well.
There are bargains to be had at big chain stores and I get that, you need knickers and bra's and socks and the likes. But something that gives you that sense of cool without paying $1000 for one piece. Then there is nothing like supporting handmade and believe me this trend is getting bigger and bigger and hopefully the mass produced will be a minority and this cycle will swing back to a balance where we have less but are a whole lot happier for it..
Also check the amazing Leonie at the Collective Store 78 Bay Tce, Wynnum, she is getting a cult following. People are coming from the Gold Coast and Sunshine coast to check out the shop..
http://www.thecollectivestore.com.au/
Also new to the scene is Handmade Highstreet, shop 1/466 Ipswich Road, Annerly..
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Handmade-Highstreet/134167206684569
merry xmas

Feel good exercise

Being a modern woman balancing being a wife and a mum, my two most important roles, I also need to be a business woman as that allows me to share and be me in the world..
There are a lot of lonely times within that especially with modern business being through the web, don't get me wrong I love it and I have free time to help at my kids schools without too much hassle.. But in those times between 9-2.50 Monday to Friday when I am not doing that I have to stay disciplined to keep my mind positive.. We all work on that at different degrees..
So one thing I really love doing when I am out and about is that if I see a woman who has put some effort into her outfit and she is totally cool with it all. I like to take the time to say something positive but simple like "I love your frock, it looks so good on you!". Sometimes it hits the floor but that is only once out of 100. It makes me feel good seeing some shine for a moment at the fact a perfect stranger has noticed her and I love seeing women making that effort to look amazing and chic..
It's not about hunting down a woman but if you notice someone just make the extra effort to say something so that she knows you noticed.. You never know what change you could make in that persons day, but you will always recognise that that little effort for such a smile in return is so totally worth it..
We don't have to stop poverty or feed every child in the world or rescue every animal every day to feel good, we could, in the meantime, make a woman feel amazing..
You are totally and always worth it..

Brisbane Festival on right now..

Ok so not to mention the amazing venues like Powerhouse Museum and Southbank and the Metro Arts all having amazing gigs and performances on.. There is insane light shows at Southbank every night, Santos City of Lights.. There is a light exhibition there as well that you walk through - Liquid Interactive Light Scope.. There is an amazing funk circus performance on at the Powerhouse tonight at that magical stage, Petit Mal.. I want to split myself in two and go all over..

It is art and creative performance of local and international talent at a high calibre. So give them some of your valuable time and have an awesome day or night out..

Trunks anyone!!!

One day I dream of having my own little range of divine ports that will see you through any adventure.. Yes I smell it now, exquisite leathers, lining that you wish you had a matching skirt made from... Little wallets that are easily removed that hold your makeup brushes or nail kit or something you love doing while you are on a flight.. Drawing pencils ah sketching and designing your future..
My inspiration on how to design and manufacture these ports are coming from this amazing book out right now, I am slowly making my way through it, it is the history of LV 100 Legendary trunks.. The opening line reads 'The 19th century belonged to the explorers, the archeologists and the adventurers. Governments endorsed this kind of travel either for Colonial or evangelization reason or as it goes on to mention to establish power.. These travelers did not want to go without their comforts and the intelligence of Louis Vuitton was to talk to his clients and find out what their needs were and design each of these trunks to satisfy all purposes.. He did ground breaking designs with materials that weren't even conceived then.. It is, I believe, the reason it has become such a revered label, where others stumbled he set standards..

Now I know today we have all our creature comforts wherever we go as it is just in transit that we require the comfort of our possessions and the ability to access them without all our things falling on the floor of the airport.. But also we want an effortless style.
But in the meantime read an amazing story of a great designer and inventor for the lifestyle of adventurers.. The pictures themselves are just so delicious you could just imagine how people traveled in those days..

http://www.amazon.com/Louis-Vuitton-100-Legendary-Trunks/dp/0810982471

The origins of Lipgloss

We had our photoshoot recently for MX mag and Steve the photographer asked a great question.. When was lipgloss invented, as one of us pulled one out during the shoot..
I had no idea and so I thought that would be a great thing to investigate..
Max Factor did a lot for makeup for the masses and they started out in the world of film.. So they had all these tricks to make the star look amazing and surreal.. So in 1930 lipgloss was first used in the black and white films to emphasise the presence of the leading lady.. By 1932 it was available to the masses and the original formula was used up until 2003 till the product was retired..
In 1973, Bonne Bell, released the first flavoured lipgloss called Lipsmackers.. mmmmmmm
It's marketing was a line of making sure that when you got your first kiss that is was something for him to remember..
In 2009 a UK beauty company sold it's lipgloss with a date rape drug detector with it. How we change within half a century...
Not only that you can get lipgloss that makes your lips look bigger.????
There's also a great book called 'two lipsticks and a lover" by Helena Frith-Powell. Read about her she is fun and I love the sense of adventure she has with covering this topic.
http://helenafrithpowell.com/about
It's a great book on how French women dress and one of their golden rules is they always, always leave the house with lipstick on. But if you feel that is too much for you every day, fall back on the trusty lipgloss which adds a soft touch of colour and shine.. I have them everywhere, both lipsticks and glosses, in this case a little effort goes a long way..
Irene

Style for any age

I was flipping through the Satorialist book that I have and what struck me is to see all people of all ages wearing some current or past trend piece in a way that is their own. So really does trend or styles have an age limit, hell no.. Are we supposed to because we are a mum or a nana give up on ourselves and put ourselves at the back of the social scene because we don't relate or want to do what the up and coming trend setters are doing.. No hopefully we are in tune with what works for our body type and then explore the boundaries of that.. Reuben's art teacher was rocking a great ensemble today and he is in his 50's and styling it even for school.. He's a well traveled man and an established artist so his style is reflected in a little tailoring and a little relaxed.
The point is we are not determining our style by our age but by our lifestyle and our experiences.. Who you really dress for is you, and other women, but it should 90% be down for you.
Is it really an age thing for style.. As long as you don't wear outside what your body can pull off. I don't mean that you shouldn't wear wide leg pants because you are short and of a lovely proportion. I have plenty of clients who wear my wide leg pants and fit that body shape and they rock it.. It is about who you are and what meets your personality and what makes you feel confident. Body language is the biggest part of our communication and our dress sense and style helps us convey that..
Living in London for 2 years, I met loads of Punks and I can tell you they are lovely people in general, but in their social demo they encourage that style to reflect the music they listen to and the political view they endorse..
I think the attempt to write an all encompassing Style book would be impossible because there are differences in every body and personality that can break or bend a style rule.. I surprise myself all the time on what I can pull off, accessories are your greatest friend seek them out and get a few of everything so it goes with your wardrobe.
When you play with the basics and allow yourself to explore I think that is where you really define the boundaries of your style and break them.. Try on something different, just have a play, cause sometimes it can be the make, not the style that rules that one out for you..
Have fun next time you have time at the shops and take in things that you don't normally try. If the shop is quiet they won't really mind you having a play with ideas, in fact you could be helping the girl on the floor..
Enjoy

Creative Fashion

I love this time of year as it is the time to put together the new collection for Spring.. I never work in a conventional way as I kind of design on a whim.. I love being inspired by creative people and art, so I like to bring a bit of that into my designs..
I research on many fashion websites not to copy but to be inspired. Seeing how things are put together in street fashion blogs, on real people...
Fashion to me should always be practical but it doesn't hurt to work on your assets and show the best of you.. Although today I have a trilby on as my hair isn't playing fair which is usually in Winter, this morning it was a beanie. No-one has to know your reason for what you wear but if you look smoking then that is where your fashion becomes art.
So this coming season for me is going to see cowl tees, singlet tanks and dresses, that will be worn under my silk caftans that are already in production.. They are going to be so addictive I am already looking for more fabrics..
There are two new vintage dresses coming into the range but I am working on tweeking the vneck ruffle into a decadent maxi with metal tabs on you so you put that skirt wherever you want it so it can be a short dress or dragging on the ground...
There is also going to be some old designs coming back, a-line skirts, more colours in the rolldown pants and Grace pants, linen/cotton drawstring pants and I am working on my own screen prints for tees. These aren't going to be just any kind of tee, they are going to be super vintage style...
Life is good. Enjoy the sun..

Courageous You

In life you have to step out of your comfort zone when you reach a fork in the road where you are bored or unsatisfied with your momentum or feel a niggle for something different. Be it in your wardrobe, career or relationship.. When I say change I mean spice it up, do something different, start new habits, wear new designs, try new colours, different languages, different holidays.. It doesn't have to major but just something that makes you skip out the door into life..
Here are some inspirational quotes from Reading for Success. I love this guys stuff.. Remember you are always learning so make sure you put something worthwhile in there..
Remember the anchor of who you are. Learn it. Live it.
Anytime you feel uncomfortable, no matter where you are, greet someone. Make a connection.
When you find yourself looking to someone else for answers, it’s time to stop and reflect. You have all the answers you need.
Do things because you truly feel powerful, not because others actions tell you. Stop trying to keep up.
Track when you feel awesome and when feel terrible. Notice what causes each. Stop the later. Enhance the former.
Be impeccably you. Boldness means pushing. Innovation’s messy. Enjoy it.
Ask why for everything. Don’t do anything without a good reason.
How do you want to feel when you accomplish a goal? We are after feelings, not check boxes. It’s the only way to really enjoy a victory.
Everything is progress.
This is not to get permission. Nothing is. The answer is yes. If you want it then do it.
Do what will make most money the fastest and then what makes most money. First think what can you make money from tomorrow. As that supports you, shift to what makes you most money over time.
It’s a risk. You could totally bomb. You could suck. But the fun makes it worth it.
Use your most precious gifts. Not just any gift. The most precious and uniquely yours.
The things you see as negative may turn out to be unique qualities. It is part pregnancy advice, which when you are past that stage you might want to lightly skim over those bits, but she is validating the making of that change from being a career woman to being a mum and then going back to find a happy medium.
I wrestle with this all the time and just having another woman write about it in such a funny way allows the sense of community in that this battle is not just mine.. The fashion industry yes is a funny monster all of it's own, but if you look at it from a different point of view it too has its opportunities to make a difference.
Moya gets political too on how woman, mothers are not validated in the workspace or the social system. Just imagine though when our load is a little lighter from having to be available for all minor and major things in our childrens lives on a day to day basis. Just how much we will be able to do in the world..
There is no greater force than a mothers love or her organisational skills either.. Planning food for a week for 4 people, investing in our passion, being a lover, teacher, carer and cleaner. All the while doing things that encourage the feeling of being a beautiful woman of the world.

http://mamacoutureshop.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=11

I think we too believe in the underestimation and sometimes we just need to do things that allow us to realise just how much we have grown..

Winter Personality

Well the bom has just advised us we are in for a long cold Winter.. It's hard to stay focused on gorgeous frocks and silks etc when we are about to enter a long cold winter.. But it allows you to play with your style personality as you can mish and mash things that you wouldn't normally do..
I have some caftans in the range that I am looking into making some long sleeve tops out of Bamboo to layer underneath it. I have my first range of tights coming out this weekend so that will open up potential for frocks to be worn with them.. Bamboo colours will be here soon in those as well.
But before you go shopping, take time to get to know your clothes, if you put away your seasonal clothes to make room in your wardrobe then lay out your winter wares from last year and be ruthless in assessing which are keepers and which just don't have the mojo to see out another season.. Also don't be afraid if the designs that you can't bare to let go of may just need a little splash of colour to bring them back to life.. Natural fibres are another plus for this reason they are the easiest thing to dye..
Always go for good cuts, they are easy to mix and match and they will have more potential to be appropriate for different occasions. Also too look at necklaces and bracelets as they are your opportunity to add a different personality to an outfit that you love. Change your tights style as well, detailed or prints (be careful too busy and it adds bulk) or some that are plain.. It can be the grounding factor to an outfit even though only a splash is seen.
Enjoy rugging up..

women in business

Where I am today and where I see myself going is not even thinkable without the amazing network of women I get to work with every month.
Stacey and Southbank Markets for both Young Designers and the Lifestyle market, she has been so enthusiastic about my developments in my business.. Emma from Red Revival for doing my funky brooches and being a beautiful person to work with. Minnie for teaching me how to sew 8 years ago and still comes in a critiques my work, love you..
My mother in law for giving me perspective, my mum for always checking in to see how I am going and if I am jumping hurdles.. My ever supportive friend Rachael for always putting things in perspective for me and being there.. The girls at Portside for being so encouraging and supportive and all the other women in fashion that share the excitement and the challenges of being in this trade.
And of course all the ladies who come and shop with me. Giving me feedback, support, encouragement and when I need it, criticism.
To the Etsy, BrisStyle team, the support through the emails and forums makes the world of business at home that little bit bigger..
Leonie at the Collective Store at Wynnum for being willing to think outside the square and starting an awesome shop in the middle of a town that is yet to find it's funky side.. Thanks for taking it in the right direction..
Vicki from Incub8r in the Valley for also being a hub for creative women, thanks for taking on that challenge and doing what it takes to make it a success.
So whether you think you make a difference whether it be big or small. What pulled me in was this black onyx faceted bracelet with a sold silver skull on it. Now this bracelet always gets a great reaction from people some positive and some quite confronting, so therefore I love it..

It is run by a beautiful lady named Sam who just happens to have a child at the same school as my son's, great coincidence.. She also has this insane chair made out of horns and cow skin that makes it just an amazing piece of work that is also functional..

There are many artisans with their jewelry in there and the price points are insane reasonable.. They are unique and diverse, I love going in there to see which piece I can lust after next. So if it is for a special event or someone, or just because it is time for a treat, go and see what little gems are on offer..

Stone and Metal..
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Stone-And-Metal/141349025895330

Arthur St,
Fortitude Valley, Brisbane..

Streamline Luggage

I have a love of vintage luggage or bags. I don't know why they just make me feel, magical.. So I have been on this endless search to find someone who made just the stuff and didn't live in England and not post outside of their country. Frustrating..

So I was watching this modern French movie the other day and I saw it, so I thought I would google the movie and the luggage used in it and voila. I found them..

http://www.steamlineluggage.com/ is the website you need to get to to find some amazingly gorgeous and user friendly luggage.. Hopefully they have the forethought like Spencer and Rutherford who supply you with a plastic fitted bag that goes over you luggage to protect it in the airplane and also stops you having to use all that plastic in the airport.

I think if you collect a few pieces here and there they make a great investment piece. Like anything you love, you don't have to say no to them just pick your moment to spend time with them.

Golden find, share with only your closest girlfriends as we don't want them to become too popular..

Designer Brisbane - the Loft

I put my hat in the ring for being the fashion blogger for Broadway on the mall and as such I had to go in there and interview shops to get their perspective on their shops ethos...
I found awesome shops in there on the second and top floor. A bit of a maze to get around it all but still a little adventure if you have the time to let it unfold.

Natalie Denning is a machine, she has the Loft - ladies wear, Dirtbox menswear and Bessie head. Her collection of designs in all her shops are so desireable you want to sell your house and use all your capital to have those clothes. But to be honest unless you go there when there is a sale I don't see how the average person who wants a little something new regularly would be able to go there regularly. On and off over a year maybe 2 or 3 times maybe but not exceptionally regular. So put your name down on their mailing list and run to them when they have a sale on. Rachel Gilbert is so my favourite designer right now, that woman has it all covered and if she isn't the next big thing from Australia then that would only be a crime..

I could rattle about these shops as they are a big step in style for Brisbane. Including on the ground floor where Scotch and Soda are, it is like walking into a big warm walk in wardrobe with all your favourites in there. There are staples in such cool fabrics and colours and mostly natural fibres. Hurry with them though they are moving away from those as their main port of call which I hope they don't go too far down that track.. Divine pieces, a step out of the usual for you staples. Men and Women can shop in there side by side and come out feeling that retail satisfaction.. Most of their designs are pretty reasonable but some are definitely up there.

The rest of the Broadway Mall well, it goes from this high end to well Just Jeans and this discount store that has mainly synthetics and so many copies of each you would be afraid to buy anything in fear of being a carbon copy of the cheap and nasty. Sorry have to be brutal here, even though I liked some pieces the fabric was cheap and there were too many of the same thing there..

This is where my label and other hand made and local designers, I feel fills a need, that middle road fashion. Awesome uniqueness without insane prices to be different.. There are some amazing designers at local handmade markets like Etsy sellers at Bris Style events, soon to Laneway markets on the first Saturday of the month in Winn Lane where the Flamingo Cafe is. Also at places like Portside Markets (2nd and 4th Sunday) and of course the Young Designer Markets on the first Sunday of each month. So support the little guys and be unique, it will be easier on your wallet and give you diversity that isn't always available in stores..

Then from the money you save from shopping there you can go to Bessie Head and Scotch and Soda and be decadent for a day and not feel guilty..

Make your dollar and your style count..
Irene

Shoe Fettish

Ok so how is this for serendipity. I love a good shoe like any hot blooded woman so when I came across this website mentioned by my crafty neighbour Emma from Red Revival at YDM on the weekend well...... It's Tuesday and I have woken from drool coma..

How I love thee, like Dorothy, except instead of just in red they come in all assortment of colours..
So I have made contact with the lovely swedishhasbeens.com and am in negotiations with getting a collection over to use in my upcoming photo shoots and fashion parades which will be a plenty this year.. In between liasing with students in photography and make-up etc. lovely customers who rock my range like a trooper.

Things will be getting so down right funky you just won't be able to look away.. As I always do vintage designs and I favour the 70's it seems like a perfect match.

Yes they have a price tag on them to deep breath through but you know what! All this fast consumerism is doing my head in. Give me a piece that makes me glide through the air as I go from shop to shop, meeting to meeting and I will show you a successful woman, a happy wife and a loving mum.. All is bliss when you step out on the right foot..

check them out. www.swedishhasbeens.com

Sizing it all up

Just been reading the Satorialist looking for some inspiration on what the international people are doing.. Which he never disappoints.
When I was scrolling down I came upon his writing on this woman that he had thought to describe as curvy. At first I couldn't pick which women he was talking about, she is wearing black in the second shot and then the denim in the first, yes I was coming from the bottom of the page. Both times she is wearing wedges which helps give her balance to her so called extra weight.. He got some backlash by calling her curvy, which she is a little curvy, in a healthy and ever so slight way.
What we fail to realise is that each era, each time frame of fashion and society has a way which has an acceptable way to look. Victorian era, Rubenesque, 50's, 60's, and now.. It's just today we have so many ways that is acceptable it is our time now to discover who and how we want to be and sometimes that freedom can be overwhelming.. Though I find that we are quick to judge and chastise those who are fearful of or need to label who a person is.
Do you need to fit a mould?
Does that determine who you are and want to be?
I think time and emotion are wasted on what is deemed pretty or desirable. When being in the moment, enjoying the people you have and following a passion or two, is something that will liberate yourself and every woman you come by..
The corset was thrown away a long time ago I just think at times we still are settling into that freedom..

Happy in my skin

I have just been to Bangkok for a recent buying trip for fabrics for my range.. This gave me a great opportunity to look at the world of fashion as a customer.. Trying on 8 pairs of jeans to almost walk out in vein, I was so sure that this shop was my kind of place, then as I left I saw them, the one's. Stretch cotton, oh yeah, skinny leg but not too low cut, little split on the side, divine, please oh please fit.. Winner..

What became apparent to me is that what I offer in my range is quite unique and diverse.. I found it so hard to find a pair of pants that suited my voluptuousness, let's face it no matter how much weight I loose I have thighs and a booty. Thus I came to the conclusion, I love who I am and how I look. My thighs carry me to the places I need to go, my booty well that is part of me, I am a woman.. I have a daughter and therefore a responsibility to teach her the positives about body image.. So my range suits my lifestyle, I don't think I am unique, so therefore I think it fits most...

I eat my salads, I grill my fish but I enjoy my chocolate and my other little treats. Sweets are like a moment when timed right hold such a great, fun memory, I am still raving about the Tiramisu I had in Bangkok..

So I design for a woman's figure, arms, boobs, booty and height, to create designs that give the freedom to look glam whilst being efficient.. I look at my range with love and pride knowing that what I do in my small way allows women to walk in the world with that little bit more confidence.. I know when I wear my clothes I know I am at my best, I hope that what the clothes do for you is that and just a little bit more..

Today in the markets I saw the light shine in ladies faces as they stepped out of the change room to see their reflection, and love it.. I think I took that a little for granted for a while but I am humbled today by women of all shapes and sizes finding their happy place..

Thank you..

Websites Inspiring Me..

The world is an amazing place with so many awesome people making beautiful things to inspire us, to make our lives easier and to create the sense of openess that no matter where we live the opportunities are created equal for all..

I have been researching cool things in New York and the US really and a few in the UK.. I thought what an amazing title so I googled her and the review in the London Age was amazing so I bought it and have been studying it all week.

Not only is this book about history, back to the 1800's but it is about how women and men coped with life during some of the hardest times in history..

Eg. A madame was captured in northern France for harbouring allies and was sent to Ravensbruick concentration camp, whilst inside she befriended a lady who worked for Schiaperelli design house. Thus when she was eventually set free her striped uniform had been contoured to fit her elegantly so even though she wore it, it didn't wear her..

Hairdressing salons still operated with minimal supplies to keep women's hair coiffed during and after the war. Just the act of having their hair washed and dried and set gave that woman the strength to go on to get life back to normal. After the mass rape of women in Berlin, women walked 12miles and came to a village, the hair dresser had 1 mirror and 1 hairdryer, he set about to wash their hair numerous times to get all the mud out of their hair. Though when he was finished those women had something of themselves back.

In times of travail it is known that the concept of fashion has helped society move on, rebuild and renew.. There are many examples of such stories in this book. It validates that the human spirit finds something of itself liberated through this individual form of self expression and distraction. There is more to fashion than what is portrayed in magazines etc, it is food for the soul, the desire to be a woman is always strong.

The first department store was the first step towards women becoming independent, without necessarily needed a chaperone. Women's public places were now beauty salons and department stores. Working women were put into proximity to nice things, perfumes, nice clothes etc which got them away from just domestic service. This was one of the many stepping stones to eventually allow women to vote..

So this book proves on paper that fashion has a very important place in life.. A tool for rebellion, liberation, expression and therapy.

There are many inspirational thoughts about fashion in this book I am sure I will drawing from it inspiration for many topics to come..

Men's style

Went to Cha Cha Grill last night for dinner. To support this restaurant that lost their other restaurant at Southbank, Jelly Fish due to the floods, and to have a nice night out together..

Now I can't help myself when I am out I am always looking at people who are dressing for an occasion to see what I would add, take away or just flat out redo.

To my surprise, I saw not one, not two but about 5 men at all different tables wearing a tee shirt to dinner. With a Jacket to accompany it, NO, with a vest to jazz it up a bit NO. Just a tee shirt and jeans. Jeans I understand can be worn and smartened up for a dinner night on a Sunday but not with a tee, no matter how designer it is..

So I thought maybe they just need a little advice on how to step in the right direction. I have been studying men's styling in my course this past two weeks and just like the ladies there are staples that men should have in their wardrobe. Here is the list.

Black dress shirt - seriously timeless and so smart on any man...

A white tee, go for quality here not quantity, it will show in the wear.. Great with jeans and under vests, sweaters.

A good scarf - a man can look so European and suave in the right one. Remember short neck small scarf, long neck and tall, this scarf. Same rules as women guys, elongate or play..

A good leather belt - again quality nothing too blingy otherwise it will only work in certain occasions.

White dress shirt - it can be printed lightly or embossed if you don't want to be too washed out with it but remember you guys can accessorise as well. Let it work with your personality.. Just a little bit of styling will make you look more successful and feel it. Fake it till you make it.

Cashmere sweater - I know it sounds a bit over the top but seriously men look hot in a light weight sweater. This will keep you warm but not add bulk. You need one only so pick a colour that suits your eyes and skin colour, everything else will just fall into place.

Jeans - I mean a good pair, not one that has all detailed stitching that will date easily enough. One that suits your body type, remember short leg where straight legged or a slight flared if you have a bit going on in the trunk. Tall well you can wear anything you like, even a slight flare would be fun for you too. Remember a good weight denim will soften after washes. It should be slightly tight when you buy it but not so much so you have to breathe in.. If you are carrying some extra weight see if you can also find jeans that have a bit of a wide waistband. It will pull you in a bit and avoid the over hang, not a good look.

Black socks - cotton, just do it. They will last longer and be cooler. Buy 3 sets of the same at one time so the washing doesn't undo all your good preparation..

Shoes - a good ankle boot in a nice soft leather is a must.. Black dress shoes, pointy ones are for the tall people, it draws too much attention to your feet as your legs won't balance out that look. I think a good leather sandal as well, our weather is warm and you can never go wrong with them. Just make sure you wear them with a nice pair of loose fit Linen pants. That is such an awesome look, cool, casual, smart and able to walk into any establishment and fit right in..

Cargo pants - I am only mentioning them cause I know people are going to have them. So if you are this is the rule of thumb. If you are short don't have one's with too many pockets. They will make you look wide and short. Pockets on the back and front are fine. But if you must have pockets on the legs, make sure they are tight to the pant and don't USE them. Not at all. Keep all your things in your front and back pockets... Again, a tailored pant would be much more appealing and unless you are going to work in them, they would suit any occasion.

Ironing tip; Iron your smallest part of your garment first then work up to the bigger panels. A. you don't forget the smaller pieces and B. you don't crease the bigger panels trying to get to the smaller ones..

There are more staples you need like coats and suits but I will cover that another day as that is not a light topic either..

Step it up guys. Impress your lady and invest in yourself. You are totally worth it..

villa-villa kula: QUEENSLAND FLOODS.

villa-villa kula: QUEENSLAND FLOODS.

Autumn Colour Wheel

If you are a lady in this colour wheel there are 3 different shades to this colour wheel but I am just going to stay on the middle road and explain how you can elaborate here and there when you wish..

So, in regards to hair colour they tend to be a copper red to a neutral beige.. The skin colour tends to be warm, so olive with a bit of sunshine add to it, otherwise can be white without. So with the varying hair and skin tone just remember, paler skin vie away from stronger bright options of your colour wheel think more Winter options, dark but with colour. Whereas those with more olive in the complexion go for the muted Autumn colours which are listed below.

So for your colour options to wear they are easy to remember, just think of the colours of Autumn leaves (Canadian style), all those earthy tones but in a variety of colours. Go for muted and warmth when you are looking at the colours of Burgandy, Green, Camel, Orange, Beige, Tan, some teal blue, greys are great for you, the lighter version though. Always think golden undertone when you are thinking of these colours.. These colours are easily available as most of your stock staple colours can be found in the basics from most designers.

To give you more of a visual, an example of your Autumns are Elle McPherson, Terri Hatcher, Keira Knightly, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce.. I know you may think there is a varied comparison in there but look at them online and you will see that they have a golden undertone to their complexion.. They will glow with a bit of orange added for blush as they need that bit of colour to enhance what is just below the surface.

Your eyes are generally light brown to green with a tinge of grey in there in some cases.. On rare occassions there will be blue Autumns but there will be a bit of grey in there.. The hair may have started off light as a child but has darkened with age.. Just remember there is that tinge of Orange in your colouring, at the base of your hair colouring tending towards orange/red - to light blond. I am hoping you are getting my colour wheel explanations, read it over a few times and you will get it.. Just look at the people I have recommended and it will make more sense to you especially if some of the traits relate to you.

Points to remember - look for colours with a warm undertone, that will match the tone of your complexion. Avoid clear and bright colours instead go for earthy and warm.. Black and white won't suit you, so go for makeup that will add some colour and match the black instead with cream or taupes or beige.. Navy, olives, golden brown and warm greys work very well for complete outfits.

My daughter has these eyes, the blue with a tinge of grey around the edge almost purple and fits this colour wheel perfectly. Greys just pop on her and she wears lots of oranges and reds, greens and blues.. She wears her blacks on her bottom and sometimes we get the warmer toned pinks in there.. She is an earthy girl in her colour options.. I love watching how the colours she wears that are so different to mine but just give her that glow that is just beautiful to admire..

Even if you change just one colour in your wardrobe that is a safe way to change your comfort zones with the colours you can play with. Colours help bring out that latent beauty so even if you start with your eye shadows take baby steps will get you there..

Enjoy

Irene

Summer person colour options

Ok this one can be a little confusing for you to grasp as we think of Summer wearing all these bright colours.. Whereas this person needs to wear softer hues of colour. Their skin colour is quite pale even though it can sometimes border on a soft Olive skin colour.. Delicate, soft and light colours are the best options to make this one look amazing, pastels are better for this person..

Hair colour on Summers are usually blonde or blonde as a child and have turned to a light brown as they mature.. Though they may be a mousy blonde their hair, when in the sun regularly, it goes light again.. Their skin is quite pale, to the point there is pink rings showing under the skin in the whitest part of their body.. The skin colour can range from white to pink beige, shades of pink. If you are deciding between Summer and Autumn to define this skin colour remember that Summers usually tan and Autumns usually burn..

Summer eyes are usually blue, green, gray or soft hazel.. It can be hazy near the iris, rather than a clear colour. They can have a very clear blue eye colour but that is an exception, their whites of their eyes are usually creamy in contrast to the iris, as opposed to Winter, whose eyes are sharp in contrast.

Famous Summer people are Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Charlise Theron..

Points;
The best colour for this person is pinks, light blues and light grey.. Solid colours are better for this person, whereas if you wish to wear prints make sure they are pastels or watercolour prints but not near the face.

Go for soft texture fabrics, cotton knits, if your body shape permits if it doesn't then go for wovens as that is more flattering.

You rock neutrals so aim for those, but remember don't get obsessed with them as you can wear them easily enough with your colour palette.. There are loads of options in your colours, pinks, blues, greens and light lavender and yellows.. Just remember no really sharp colours and soft prints and you can have quite a variety of pieces to go for. You will find designers who work mainly with those prints in recurring seasons but keep your eye out for when trends pick up on it and branch out to other designers..

For the staples go for soft greys and navy. Avoid dark borwns, grey beiges, yellow-beiges.

Gwyneth is big on light greys which she usually layers the colours, cargo green on the bottom and lots of soft yellows. She has a great sense of style and can do with a few more prints in her day but she is usually on the money.

Good luck and go print shopping..

Spring Colour Wheel

I haven't delved into this complex topic before as it is a hard thing to comprehend without being shown different examples in each one.. Which is why seeing a colour consultant or stylist is going to give you more a better view on it. But see what you can gather from the following information..

A Spring person is someone who is vibrant, colourful and exaggerated. Their skin tone is of light or ivory complexion, they usually tend to be natural golden blondes, auburn or strawberry blonde redheads with freckles or rosy cheeks.. Their eye colour tends to be light blue or green. Thus they have a high colour of red in their skin and tend to blush easily.

Spring colours are strong splashes of colour nothing shy pastel here. Shades of cream, champagne and camel take on a different shade when worn by this person..

To give you an idea of a Spring person think, Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman they are classics in this part of the colour wheel..

The best white for this person is an off white almost creamy also they can wear a good clear beige to camel colour. Spring browns are a tan and to chocolate in the shade of more milk chocolate rather than dark chocolate.. When looking for a grey go for the yellow side of this shade, so stick to the lighter scale, especially when you are wearing it near your face.. Even with Navy use the same principle, lighter rather than darker.

Peach, apricot, salmon, coral and peachy pinks look outstanding on this person, also look at turquoise, aqua light blues. Light to medium violet, keeping it to the blue side of violet is better. Then onto your oranges, keep them bright, coral is good, though remember all palates can wear coral it is one of those fabrics that isn't biased and easy to share pieces with girlfriends so make sure you have some of these in your wardrobe..

Black can be worn but make sure you lift it with your spring colours, especially near your face.. A bright scarf or earrings should do the trick.. For the fairer of the Spring person you should avoid Black near your face altogether it will just make you appear paler.. Also never wear pure white, off whites are doable but not a white white..

Your wardrobe should be a nice array of colours, with your usual staple basics in Black and greys.. But colour is the way to go for you.. Nicole and Julianne look amazing in the emerald green and you should too..

Next post to be Summer..

The simple life, fashion included.

Keeping life simple is a good rule to live by.. It helps you save money, keeps the important things a priority and helps you maintain focus.. This is also something that you can maintain in your wardrobe.. Most of the time when you look in the wardrobe and can't find anything amazing to wear it is because of many points.. Buying things on an impulse, either because you have an event to go to and haven't bought anything for it yet and you need something.. Buying something because you are going to loose weight and have bought it with that optimism in mind.. Or bought a piece just because it is a designer that you want to have a piece of and it is on sale and you just got to have one of theirs in your wardrobe, from personal experience..

It is a good time of year to spend getting familiar with your wardrobe and seeing what is in there and can stay and what is in there and needs to go.. Don't do it with a girlfriend, unless she has an awesome sense of style, do it with a camera and get dressed in each outfit and take a shot of yourself in it.. Also be ruthless, if you are keeping something because it is an awesome cut but doesn't have the glimmer anymore then either get a pattern cut off it or if it can be dyed to give it new life do that or get rid or it or replace it in kind..

Another way of going through your wardrobe is looking at what fits, what doesn't and what you haven't worn yet.. Keep the piles separate on your bed and work through it, the keeps, try them on and see what matches with it.. Also your shoes as well see what your bottoms or frocks are, what shoes go with it and what gaps you may have in your wardrobe and what you have excessive of.. This is a great way to plan out your next shop so that when you hit the stores you will have a good focus on what you need to make your wardrobe complete.. It takes little bits of effort like this to make you feel complete when you are getting ready for an event or for work, or for picking up the kids.. When you feel good you have more focus to spend on the amazing opportunities that are always around you and then you can do more with your days..

I have been reading about this guy who has this amazing way to use the mind in a positive way rather than burying our problems plan them out, map them and think our way to a positive lifestyle.. Keeping yourself looking fabulous is just one of the ways to make this an easier step..

http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/the-beginners-guide-to-being-congruent

If you have time he is worth a read..

Healthy inside, glamorous outside

It's all well and good to have a wardrobe full of clothes that fit our shape or skin colour or hair colour... If you don't feel good on the inside great clothes will only carry you so far..With my styling I would never suggest wearing spanx or any other under wear that pulls you in so that you have to be in pain to get away with the outfit.. So a little bit of loving to yourself every day in the way of good food and daily skin cleansing routine, give a day or two of missing it, will take you a long way over time..

So make sure that with your daily meals you have little or no processed food, wholesome bread is ok but in small amounts.. Pasta I know you can't make yourself so that is ok, but keep the crackers and chips to a minimum, use celery, carrot or cucumber instead for dips.. Everything in moderation of the not so good food and plenty of the good food and your skin and waistline will love you..

Then there is water, 8 glasses is a good start but if you can do more then do so.. I don't think anyone ever suffered any bad side effects of too much water.. It's great for your kidneys which flush out your toxins and also for your brain so when you are tired sometimes a couple of glasses of water will give you a good boost.. Also starting the day with warm water with a bit of Lemon in it, is a great way to start your digestion, especially in Winter.. Even if you come back to this from time to time it is better than not doing it at all.

Exercise, can't speak highly enough of it.. I used to do 45 mins of walking and yoga a day and now I do 3 x 30 minute personal training sessions a week and do yoga when I feel too tight and in small 15min sessions as that is all I can fit into my life.. So if you can 3 big sessions of something a week and then fillers during the week when you can.. Whatever you can fit into your life and thus build upon your energy levels you will be amazed at how clear you think and how much more stamina you have.. You might feel smashed the first month but keep at it, the only person who wins from it is you and you are worth backing.. Plus you will feel amazing when that part of your body that you shrink from is something that you are willing to shake in front of the world.. ah so liberating..

Cleaning products for your skin.. Well my family and I live organically and I keep to this with my skin care range as well and there are very cost effective ways of living this way.. Grown is an amazing range and developed by two Australian brothers for their Aunt who had cancer and developed allergies. Their face cream is amazing for after cleaning, Chamomile, they also have an awesome hand cream that make you feel amazing when you have to walk into a meeting you have to put your best effort on for..Aesop is also a good range, less is more with this range as it is concentrated. It is organic and a little decadent but even one thing from this range will make you feel amazing.. A new skin range I am experimenting with Evohe, evohe.com.au, their ingredients are insanely good, including colloidal silver.. Their website has their whole range listed and ingredients of each and it is very impressive..

Organic or natural make up is a good way to go too, as your skin is an organ that absorbs all that you put on your body. So check out Lavera, they are a great German organic make up brand.. Awesome quality and it lasts forever.. There is suncoat, karpatt, or Butter for nail polish or Couleur Caramel for eyeshadows..

Last but not least, good nights rest... My bed is my haven, I love my bedroom and I love my futon.. If I am rested, I think well, I am patient and look for solutions and find them faster..

Thanks and I hope you find something in here that makes your life that little bit more awesome..

Wardrobe Staples

Ok we are going to go through the basics of what should be in every wardrobe..
1. Coat - depending on your climate and your body type.. We have no real need for a trench here in Brisbane but in case you are susceptible to the cold one of these is awesome.. Remember to take into account your body type as this will determine the length that you require.. I like a good short Jacket for our climate and when I did live in cold climates I made sure I had a good short but super warm jacket.. It suits me, the apple..
2. Good knitwear.. you have to have one good knit jumper, its great on the not so cold days and can add more vertical lines if you go for the vneck line and wear with a scarf.. I have a pj jumper and an outdoor jumper.. Love them to bits.. Otherwise go for the turtleneck and that too will elongate the neck..
3. A good cocktail dress, for special dinners, events or just cause you want to be glamorous. There is no such thing as being overdressed and it being a bad thing.. A good black wrap dress suits most body types.. If not black then a solid colour of your choosing.. Also if you aren't a frock girl then go for matching tops and bottoms that look like a continuous silhouette.. This will give the same effect as a frock for those dressy opp's.
4. A collared shirt, I am working on a fun one for the range, white would be awesome as you can always add some colour to it with a semi precious stone necklace or some glam silk scarf..
5. The perfect pants - wide leg if it takes your fancy and you love wearing wedges or chunky boots of some persuasion.. Slim fit, it is always flattering to show your shape off somewhere.. If your thighs are the problem area then make sure your top finishes on the line that cuts in the middle of your thigh and it immediately slims that bump.. Make sure you take an honest pair of eyes with you so that they can give you the shove you need to jump out of your comfort zone.. No colluding..
6. Aline skirt, looks great on everyone and is an easy to match with a tee or tailored top..
7. Bootleg pants - It creates lower body balance and I can not praise this cut enough.. I love my denim rolldown pants and my nina and I wear them both weekly, with clogs or ballet flats..
8. Boots - don't go too high unless you feel confident to pull the look off.. Just below the knee is a good look and works with above the knee frocks in winter or shorts.. Chocolate or tan depending on what will go well with your colour palette for your wardrobe..
9. Handbag - A good quality leather handbag in your favourite neutral colour, bone, chocolate, black, it will go with every outfit and look amazing even you are wearing a casual outfit.. Simple style with one decadent piece.. I love my learther bag that I bought from Francesca Rockette at the Young Designer Markets. I use it every other day.. I have vintage bags for my going out events and they mainly cost me between $10 - $20 and I feel amazing cause I have a variety to choose from..
10. Your own signature piece - something that reflects your personal style. Mine is scarves, I love my scarves, I also love statement shoes.. They are what defines me.. they are what I invest in when I want to treat myself.. Keep your eye out for sales if you are willing to chance the piece you are dreaming of..
Enjoy your day..
http://windandwater.myshopify.com/

Wearing labels in your days

I had the amazing opportunity to know about and go to Uplate in James St Brisbane last night, sponsored and promoted by Grazia. There were goody bags at every store with champagne and nibbles here and there.

There were ladies dressed up and dressed over, photographers, film crews, lights, music and loads of girls getting on with some real retail therapy.. It gave me a great opportunity to check out what the big labels are doing and I kind of feel I am holding my own. I saw a couple of ladies in my frocks, corset and others, so I felt rather chuffed on that front too.. There are some great shops in that area and everyone was having a great night of fun..

When it comes to buying labels don't ever feel like you have to wear it head to toe to be accepted, in or cool. Chanel said always take off the last piece you put on to keep it classy.. We saw plenty of girls labeled up from head to toe and you know what I saw what was lacking was their own slant on how to wear it..

The key is diversifying where you shop.. Buy a little on Etsy, a little at vintage shops, a little at high end stores and buy great staples.. Basic white, black and grey tees, silk cami's, great jackets, cropped or long.. I love kooky shoes, I shop at Wittner - DFO great bargains on real leather shoes, Sole Devotion - James St, or Jean Robe - Emporium.. Of course I am always on the look out for someone new and amazing and that is where the internet keeps me super unique.. There are great shops in the US that send to Australia thank god, and with the exchange rate in our favour for at least a few more months take advantage of that.

There are great little designers out there and it is so cool to support up and coming designers, they work hard, they are passionate and they breathe what they make.. I love seeing labels who have made it and still keep that ethos, Sass and Bide has me excited this season with their take on choral in their range.. FCUK are a little over priced for what they are.. Bettina Liano had some awesome little pieces in there but nothing that I needed.

I did buy a straight leg pair of jeans from Scanlon and Theodore, that is a first for me and I am busting out of my comfort zone by wearing those. I need to wear those with wedges or kitty heels otherwise I look tragic in that.. So after that bit of excitement we went and had our free cocktail from Grazia at the Cru Bar..

That is where we got to do some real people watching, thus coming to the conclusion that little is more and wear for you not for others.. Have fun, keep it stylish and be you, cause that is what you will be the most awesome at.. Those who don't get you aren't for your network of friends trust me hold out for the real people and that is when you will truly blossom.. Style it up..

Petite Body Type

The one defining body trait for this type is that you are to be 5ft 3'"" or shorter.. Within this body type too you can have apple, pear or hourglass, obviously slim athletic doesn't squeeze in here due to the long leg trait..
So, with this one you have address the height and then the characteristics of the other body types as well.. Rachel Zoe, Kylie Minogue and I am sure lots of other stars are short petites as they mostly wear Louboutins and they are skyscrapers and made for women with narrow feet.. He has amazing shoes but they always give me toe cleavage, I know some women can live that but not this one..
Rachel and Kylie never ever go out in flats, rarely, they wear wedges with flowing dresses covering the frock or pant length to give the perception that their legs are longer than they are.. Kitty heels are fine if you are not a heel girl, I find that the kitty or the wedge are a great way to add height without putting yourself in the line for some near misses...

Go for the monochromatic look, it makes you look stylish and adds a slim and tall look to you instantly. It produces a strong vertical line, which is what you always want to be going for..
Go for the crop jacket as it will help make your legs look like they start at your ribs, which means high waisted cuts look great on you too.. The highwaisted pants in the range are made from a silk/linen which is soft and flowy, it focuses on the smallest part of your body at the bottom of your ribs and make your legs look they start there.. Absolutely NO hipsters, throw them if you have them or cut them into short shorts..

You can step out in a short skirt and heels but be careful with this look, the peeptoe wedge would be a safer bet. It makes you look fashionable but also 5f6' which is a awesome ending..

Also short hair looks great on petite as it shows the neck and brings the eye up to the face faster, avoid bulky items around your neck, chunky scarves are not for you. Long necklaces are what will really set your look off.. No chokers unless they are extremely fine, but even then check twice before you buy.

Avoid garment made from stiff fabrics, unless they are a wide leg pant that I find gives you height, they tend to add bulk to the shorter frame. The flowy look with fabrics that have enough weight to cascade down the body instead of clinging to you is what you want to aim for.
Avoid long shirts, if you have them tuck them in.. No top should fall below the hips..
Something you can do without having to purchase any additions is check your posture, keep your shoulders back and head high. No slouching for you, Pilates and Yoga regularly will help you automatically stay upright without tension..
Keep your pieces in proportion to your shape and height. You need to find the balance between proportion, line, colour and texture..
You can wear maxi skirts as long as you have a deep V top with it and wedges.. Just remember conceal your problem areas and add height. Check out the other body types that relate to you and write out your goals with your wardrobe and keep that in your wallet when you are shopping.

Add pieces bit by bit and if you are not confident to make any step in your wardrobe of change just push yourself a little bit and have fun, you just might discover some amazing part of you that has been hiding in the back of the cupboard for way too long.. Enjoy and have fun..

Slim Athletic body type

Ok everyone has a cross to bear and even though others don't see this body type with any issue's, there are ways to perfecting each body type..

This body type will have consistent measurements along the hips, waist and bust.. So the thing we need to do with this body type is give some shape and definition, create the illusion of shape.. This body type tends to have a slight waist and long legs.. I immediately think, basketballer, netballer, those teams have a lot of the athletic type.. Gwyneth Paltrow is a perfect candidate for this body type.. Her way of dressing is always to show off her legs or wear long flowing frocks that accentuate that asset of hers. Both ways of wearing these designs give the desired effect, flattering her assets..
Strapless bodice, form fitting shapes and stappy necklines all work for this body type.. What creates shape is pleating, detailing, beading, prints, ruching, silk and knitwear (which the rest of the body types should absolutely run from).
This body type needs tailoring, this cut works great on them. Avoid boxy designs at all costs as this tends to swamp this body type.. Belted jackets are great to give the impression of a defined waist.. Bold necklaces also add volume and draw the eye upwards..
Dress feminine - go for silks or flowing fabrics, a fluted sleeve will also add shape and softness. The bias cut in both skirts and frocks will do wonders for this body type..
Skirts - go for something with lots of pleats or detailing them..
Layering is good for this body type as it creates many horizontal lines which are a friend to this body type..
This shape can wear the skinny jean, the only shape that can wear the skinny jean.. Petite can too but with some serious wedges as most skinny jeans are made with super length to them so that can the only deterrant..
The a-line skirt is magical really, it works a treat on the pear shape and here again it rescues this body type with it's ability to make it appear there is more shape in areas that need it.
Your shoes that you can get away with is greater than most.. strappy flats that go up the calf a short way look great on you and you can wear heels just make sure the straps to them add some detail to it balances out the length that the heels give. I have plenty of tall girlfriends who are athletic and totally rock their wardrobe with heels cause they love it and are comfortable in their skin with their height..
Ok enjoy.. More points will be given on each body types on different entries.. talk soon.

Sands in the Hourglass body type;

This shape is all about balance, balance of the top and bottom and working the waistline.. Your goal is to bring the eyes focus to the areas of the body you are happy with and away from the parts that you are not.
Working with the bust first a good wrap top or frock flatters this part of you as the fabric is not just falling across the body it has a direction to go around the body. A vneck, is also good, especially in a cowl or with some details, i.e. the ruffle top in the range, it instantly compliments the busts.. Don't go for too bulky a fabric though you want more streamline fabrics, not voiles, but fabric that has a bit of body but not the bulk.. Cotton/spandex is so good for you, you should have a good relationship with this fabric as it will pull you and give you support where your body needs it. Hence that is why the rolldown pants, Grace pants and aline skirts all of which are made in cotton/spandex works for your shape.. Try and keep you bottoms plain and your tops detailed not too busy a print but if you are going to wear a print that is where I would place it...
Sleeves on your tops should be a little detailed with a slight puff or go for a 3/4 or fluted sleeve as this will make sure that the attention is on the vertical neckline. Try and avoid batwing as this will just bring way too much attention up top and not really show off your waist, and that is key gift on the way to your face..
A good little cardi or wrap will always work in your favour especially if you buy a really light fabric frock because you just had to have. So that will allow you to bend the rules a bit with the fabrics that you were near your face.. Pending on your colour palette, that is a whole new matter to take into account when you are restyling yourself..
When it comes to frocks what you want to do is elongate the waist line so something that lifts the boobs and maybe wraps around the waist to define it will be a winning frock for you..
Tees with puff sleeves and a boat neck is awesome for you, as the sleeve will focus on your neck which in itself will draw the eye up to your face.. That is the end goal, because when they reach that end that is when the chatting starts.. Crop jackets are awesome for you, or if it is a blazer make sure it is double buttoned so it gives the perception of a long waist.. a 3/4 sleeve is also good in the jacket as your wrists fall at your waistline and with some key bracelets or clasps that will help define your waist again..
Skirts that are good for you are pencil, above the knee or high waisted, just think that lovely red head in Mad Men.. She is all over the hourglass and never steps out of line of being awesome.. Cotton/spandex in this is going to do you more favours than any other fabric..
Cowl neck frocks and tops also do you justice, especially if you belt it and the fabric is of the right weight..
Dress your killer curves as you only have to define the waist and that is an easy thing to remember.. Don't go too short, but don't do too long either.. It doesn't have to be clingy but er on the side of being a closer fit than a looser.. Enjoy and have fun with this info. Remember we are all not black and white so just look at your shape and see if you may be different body types on top to your bottom..

Body Types - Pear

The pear body type is a common one, I find that that people can be a blend of two body types one for the top and one for the bottom. This is easy to understand once we have covered all the body types and the way to identify them..
Ways to identify the Pear shape is to take the measurements of the thighs and hips this will be the larger number of all your measurements. Then next down in measurements will be the bust, then the waist will be smaller again.. The pear will tend to have a flat tummy, a longer waist and heavier legs..
The goals for the Pear is to balance the overall look, you need to create a look that makes the eye go up and flatter the hips.. A great cut on the bottom is a good aline skirt, the Grace pants as the wide band tends to flatter the waist while showing off just a tad of the bottom and hiding the thighs. So the wide leg pant looks great on this shape. Usually a length of skirt is to be below the knee or wearing with tights go above the knee..
Tops with a drop neckline, not high at all unless it is a good button down top that creates the open vneck.. A little detail on the top would be awesome for this shape as it will draw the eyes up..
The strapless look is good on this shape and if your arms are not up for it then wear a nice bolero or wrap with it so that it still keeps the neck line open.. So your tops should be where your attention is going to be drawn to. Go for statement necklaces to make up for tops that have no detail..
Remember any woman no matter what size you are always looks amazing showing off your neckline...
Where crop jackets as it will show off your waist line, also clinched in waist dresses are also great for your shape as it will do you favours there. Be bold with your choices in jacket as you want to create the attention on the top half..
Coats should be worn open to create that vertical line, or wear strapped with a belt on the waist so it still creates an opening and thus giving you a vertical line..
Tops you can almost wear any kind of neck line, just make sure the length of your top is not too long as we want it to finish near the waistline to accentuate that part of you..
Dresses should be either strapless or an empire line with an a-line from the bust or hips down.. Depending on your bust choose which cut of dress flatters you.. Remember if you find you are bit of two body types work out which part of you fits which body type and dress for that type..
In the pants and skirts department go for fabrics that have a little bit of spandex in them as this will show off shape near your waist, you best part and still hold a nice line from your hips down..
So have fun with your tops and find some staples with your bottoms and you will have a lot of fun redefining your look.. Start with baby steps and then get really playful.. Hope this helps..
Designs to look at, Grace Pants, ruffle top, cowl neck top, corset dress

Body Types - Apple

Ok I am going to start with Apple as that is my shape and I have a good insight into this one.. First how to determine if you fit this profile the easiest way to work this out is to measure yourself. So if your bust and hips are pretty close in measurement and there isn't too much difference in those for your waist.. Then you are an Apple. You will find that your neckline and your legs are you assets and the point of focus that you should look to enhance in your clothing choices..

Now these are just guidelines, everyone is different both in lifestyle and personality so play with it and make the data fit you and not the other way round.. Also stop and take a moment to see whether fear is stopping you from stepping out and changing your wardrobe just a little more dramatically than you would. I always buy something out there and leave it in my wardrobe till I feel comfortable enough from looking at it enough that I can bring myself to wear. Also cause I have visualised how I can wear it, thus making sure I have what I need to make that piece work for me..

Make sure you blend up wearing plains and prints so that you can define a top and bottom, giving you a silhouette.. Start with good lingerie because if everything is being held in its proper place underneath then everything you put on top is going to look awesome just because your anatomy is where is meant to be..

Ok so we want to create a waist cause we don't really have one naturally. So wide belts or work upwards and accentuate the empire line, under the bra.. Vneck line tops or wrap tops are great, boat neck tops are also good as any woman no matter what size can show off their neck and it immediately adds some pizazz.. If you are going to wear a tee make sure it is long enough and also with some detail in the front, no clinging necessary.. Also loose tops belted with a wide belt with a straight leg or narrow leg pant will show off the leg and define a waist..

Jackets that are tailored and nip in the waist are also great for this shape. No capes or swing jackets, its all about showing shape on the top and showing the legs either by an above the knee length in skirts and frocks or pants that show of the shape of your leg. Remember there is no need to cling, dress for your age and occasion..

Work with this and have a play. Don't take it too seriously and step outside your comfort zone..

September News

Well it feels like I am not moving much but I have been putting into place some big changes. The biggest being a new website which will have a totally new look with the ease of images being bigger and clearer and with little packages for you to buy for yourself or friends. I am going to be putting designs together to offer a discount if you buy them together, this is a new way of shopping with me. Also this website won't have a minimum spend as the old one did.. It is more design based and soon to be operational..
Also it is only 7 days till Finders Keepers Melbourne and I am looking forward to a very busy weekend..
We will also be using our time in Melbourne to do a little photo shoot on the docks so keep your eye out on the Facebook page for recent updates with the designs..

See you soon,
Irene Pollak
